Ponce Blanco 2024

Ponce Blanco 2024

Introduction

Produced in the heart of Spain’s Castilla-La Mancha region, this distinctive white wine originates from the Manchuela DO. It is the creation of Juan Antonio Ponce, a visionary winemaker who founded Bodegas y Viñedos Ponce in 2005 at the age of 23. The winery is renowned for championing indigenous, often forgotten varieties like Bobal and the rare Albilla de Manchuela used here. Formerly known as "Reto," the wine has been renamed Ponce Blanco to reflect its status as the estate's primary white expression. The vineyards are located at high altitudes (roughly 700 to 800 meters), where limestone and calcareous clay soils provide a cool-climate tension that is rare for central Spain.

Wine Description

Ponce Blanco exhibits a brilliant straw-yellow hue with steely, greenish reflections. On the nose, it is strikingly original and terroir-driven, offering a bouquet of pink grapefruit, lime peel, and green apple, underscored by complex notes of wild herbs, fennel, and a distinct flinty minerality. The palate is linear and "electric," characterized by a sharp, mouthwatering acidity and a textured, slightly creamy mouthfeel from extended lees contact. It reveals savory undertones of bitter almond, white pepper, and a salty, sea-breeze finish.

Food Pairing

The "electric" acidity and saline mineral core of Ponce Blanco make it a spectacular pairing for Atlantic seafood and shellfish, particularly oysters, grilled sea bass, or octopus a la gallega. Its structural weight from barrel aging allows it to stand up to richer dishes such as stuffed chicken with quince, mushroom risotto, or pasta with pesto. It is also an excellent match for Japanese cuisine, particularly sashimi and tempura, where its citrus notes act as a natural palate cleanser. For a cheese pairing, seek out aged goat cheeses or a classic Manchego.
