Gerard Raphet Morey Saint Denis 'Les Millandes' Premier Cru 2018

Gerard Raphet Morey Saint Denis 'Les Millandes' Premier Cru 2018

Introduction

This red wine originates from France, specifically from the Morey Saint Denis village in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy. Established in the 1920s, Domaine Gérard Raphet is a historic, family run estate that is currently led by fourth generation winemaker Gérard Raphet and his daughter, Marion. The winery's philosophy focuses on a traditional, minimal intervention approach, utilizing exceptionally old vines to create authentic expressions of terroir that prioritize finesse and purity.

Wine Description

Gérard Raphet Morey Saint Denis Premier Cru 'Les Millandes' displays a delicate ruby or garnet red colour. The nose is aromatic and surprising in its intensity, offering a complex bouquet of red and black berries, raspberry, and redcurrant layered with notes of warm baking spices, earthy forest floor, and chocolate powder. On the palate, the wine is structured and elegant, featuring flavours of dark cherry and bramble fruit balanced by a silken texture and fresh acidity. It is characterized by its fine, firm tannins and a long finish that reveals hints of smoke, minerals, and spices such as pepper and cinnamon. This 100% Pinot Noir typically features an ABV of 13% to 14% and is aged for 18 months in mostly older French oak barrels, with approximately 15% new wood used annually. While the estate follows sustainable practices and hand harvests all fruit, the wine is not certified organic. The optimal drinking window is generally from release through 8 to 15 years.

Vintage Quality

The 2022 vintage in Burgundy is regarded as a stunning year for both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, characterized by a classical yet modern profile with excellent concentration. The growing season allowed for the development of wines with ripe tannins and a degree more richness than previous years, while still maintaining the finessed detail and pure fruit character for which the Raphet family is known.
